Super Summer Slumber Party T-Shirt…

The Super Summer Slumber Party of ‘08 must have not been a bad dream…
All BIG events have t-shirts, right?  13 straight nights of sleep-overs qualifies as a big event – especially when the event is run by dad.  Funny, why do we call it a “slumber” party or “sleep” over?  Neither happened.
A HUGE thanks goes [...]

The Power of Saying “No”

There, I said it…
Those 2 little letters have gotten the best of me for a lifetime.
John Kenneth Gailbraith’s housekeeper never had a problem saying no. One day President Lyndon Johnson called the Galbraith house wanting to talk to the great economist, who had lain down for a little shut-eye. “He’s taking a nap and has [...]

Dare You To Pray This…

from my friend Jerry…thanks.
This is just one of the reasons why Francis Chan continues to maintain his #3 ranking on my favorite pastors list:

Churchyard Piety

Feeling like a swim in the deep end of the pool today…
1. Churchyards don’t really exist anymore….but in the truest sense they do.
2. Piety is not a bad word – it means devoting one’s complete life to Christ.
3. Martin Luther – from Wiki (November 10, 1483–February 18, 1546) was a German monk, theologian, university professor, [...]

Challenge

Just had one of those God moments with a long time friend of mine…amazing who God brings by booth #7 here at Panera.
In catching up he shared with me an exercise he does with his students.  We all have at least one person in our lives that we find difficult to deal with.  Funny he [...]

Oh To Feel His Pleasure….

David, how do you love your friends in so many consistently amazing ways?
Mark, studying the Bible for hours each day? How do you do that?
Pam, you are always serving others – ALWAYS! How do you find the strength?
And then something clicked within my soul when I came across an all time favorite quote of mine [...]

Please Don’t Wake Me…

I’m dreaming of the day when “the church” will be more like boot camp and less like a cruise ship.

Summer Camp or Outreach?

Summer time…
Youth church camp.  Daddy debrief upon their return.  Conversation went something like this:
Me: “Tell me about camp?”
Her: “It was awesome – water slides, capture the flag, sneaking out of our cabins…!!!”
Pause: (kids need to be kids – nothing wrong with BIG fun)
Resume
Me: “Tell me about your God time at camp?”
Her: “It was good, worship [...]

“Life Change” or “My Church is BIGGER than Yours”

Church.
What is the goal?
What is the purpose of your church?  STOP!  Don’t give me a lazy answer – really think this through.
Bill Hybels, pastor of Willow Creek, said this in an interview recently:
Bill says, “The goal (of the church), is to slowly make believers independent. We (as a church and pastors) should focus our attention [...]

“Beauty from Ashes” or “What about the Naked Ladies?”

He serves with me on our parking lot team at church.
A prodigal….
Loves God with all of his heart.
Has a past like all of us do.
Early in his wandering he decided to get “inked”.
Not just one tattoo, but a body full of colorful designs.
Most of the tats are benign, a few are not….like his 2 naked [...]

Today

Create in me a clean heart God and renew a right spirit within me….
Somebody besides myself needs to pray that prayer today – not sure who – probably all of us….

My Favorite Things

It’s funny how we are, for some reason, interested in the favorite things of others. Not sure why, but here are mine…
What I’m Doing:
Twittering; Facebook; Blogging with 200 million others;  a wanna be WOW Maker; Can’t stop asking “What if…?”
What I’m Wearing:
Buckle; Fossil; Sanuks; a really cool string bracelet my daughter Addi made me;
What I’m [...]

We Don’t Care About You…

Oh, we say we care.  We throw a few resources at them…maybe even support a missionary on a college campus or add a token responsibility to a pastor’s job description to make us feel good.
“Oh you do care? Really?  Then where are the people my age in this church?”
Is it important for our churches to [...]

Daddy, Can We…?

One of the blessings of playing Mr. Mom for 17 straight days is the connection opportunity I get with my girls.
Admittedly, I often feel like I don’t do such a great job with this “dad” title.  Looking back, as they are all speeding towards their day of launch, I see so many missed opportunities.  Being [...]

Wondering if She Got it…

Jeanne and my oldest princess, 16 year old Mackenzie, are in Uganda Africa for 17 days. They are with an organization called Watoto.  Their mission was to build a home for an orphanage. The group returns home Saturday.  My contact with them has been limited to texts.
I don’t understand the relational dynamics between a mom [...]

Why Twitter?

What is Twitter?  Why is everyone talking about it?  Why should I consider it?  Watch this:

Twitter encourages connections with others
Reminds us “It’s not all about me”
Friends and family get to peek into our lives though small chunks of our days

And from blogger Rhett Smith:
There are many reasons to Twitter which I [...]

“Why I’m Leaving…”

Background:
In north Tampa, the two largest churches are less than 3 miles from each other.  I spent 20 years of my life as an active member of church “A”, and the last 5 years as a member and now staff member of “B”.  Both are making a difference for the Kingdom – with strikingly different [...]
