Dateline New York City

Day 4:

Nothing could have prepared me for this – not books, speakers, or even last years trip here. Thirty-three of us – twenty-two 6th – 9th graders and eleven adults immersed into street level, hardcore, raw ministry to the downtrodden of New York. We are 4 days into a 7 day mission trip and the miracles are many.

We have divided our group into 3 teams, each with at least 3 adults. Our ministry hub is NYSUM (New York School of Urban Ministry). NYSUM coordinates our outreaches, 3 each day. So far we have ministered to a woman’s shelter, 2 cerebral palsy homes, traveled on a mobile soup kitchen, and put on a “show” at a family shelter. Last night we had a blast joining Youth Explosion for their Friday night service in Brooklyn. This inner city youth ministry is THE youth ministry of New York City. The service was AMAZING! Today we are the entertainment during a block party in Harlem – clowns, songs, and puppets. Tonight we do the NYSUM famous “midnight run”, taking van loads of food, clothes, and the love of Christ to the homeless on the streets of Manhattan.

These youth and this old fella are being stretched so far beyond our comfort zone. Nothing could have prepared me for this in the physical realm…but the battle is not in what we see or experience…
