My Purpose

“Your role may be thankless, but if you are willing to give it your all, you just might bring success to those who outlast you” – Unknown

Seems to be a common question of those of us 40 somethings:

What is my purpose?

Now, I can no more answer that question for you than you could for me, but I think I know where to find the answer. Oh sure, the Sunday School answer would be the Bible, and absolutely yes, the answer is found within. But I am just bold enough (and maybe foolish enough) to think that I can pin-point specifically where to find the answer to “what is my purpose”.

Hit your buzzer when you know the answer:

You do this to pawns in the game of chess – plays that lose pieces or opportunities in order to obtain a more important advantage. In chess, a number of exchanges are described as ________: these typically involve losing a piece or a pawn to disrupt the opponent’s formation and open up an attack.

In baseball, this type of _______ is when a batter hits a fly ball deep into the outfield for an out so as to enable a runner on any base, depending on the runner’s speed, to score. Likewise, a _______bunt in baseball is one in which a batter deliberately allows himself to be put out while advancing a teammate to second and/or third base, from where he has a greater chance to score. Players who commit either a _________ fly or bunt are not charged with a “time at bat,” thus the out that they sacrificed is not charged against their batting average.

The term is also used metaphorically to describe selfless good deeds for others or a short term loss in return for a greater gain.

I believe that if you are searching for your purpose in life, at whatever age you may be, your purpose will be found in sacrifice. When you find your God appointed, Kingdom advancing opportunity to pour your life into (sacrifice), then you will begin to discover your purpose here on this earth.

  • Painful? Sometimes
  • Costly? Yes
  • Fulfilling? Absolutely

And in light of the ultimate sacrifice paid by our Lord Jesus Christ, is it really that much to ask of you and me?
