How and Why I Voted…

Augustine taught that if we are to enjoy the blessings of the City of Man, we must assume the obligations of citizenship.

Today we vote.

Something inside of me is troubled.

My dad sent me a copy of his devotion yesterday that is bringing me great comfort:

Praying Through The Bible by Cheri Fuller

God’s Sovereign Plan –  When our plans are upended or our dreams are shattered, when we feel as if we have lost it all, these verses in Isaiah encourage us to turn to the Lord, whose plans cannot be frustrated. Even when we have see our plans and dreams go astray or crumble, God still has a plan for the whole world – and for us. How comforting to remember that nothing can change God’s plans! His purposes always stand … In the face of the worst tragedy or disaster, remember that God has a sovereign plan for the whole earth, for our nation, for every nation of the world, and each one of us individually.

How do we as Christians choose the best candidate? As Colson said, “Not by pulling a partisan lever – that’s knee jerk ideology.  Christians should live instead by revealed truth, never captive to any party. Thus the best place to go for wisdom is not Obama.Com, but the Bible.

Oh how my soul longs for the day when God alone chooses our leaders (rendering no need for those incessant political commercials).  Check out what Martin Luther said – “I would rather be ruled by a competent Turk (Muslim) than an incompetent Christian.”  Wow – strong words from the one church reformer whose ideas most influenced the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of western civilization.

So sometime tonight, half of our country will be rejoicing while the other half will mourn.  But regardless of the outcome, the City of God endures.  As Augustine watched his city of Rome burn, he replied “the city of man can be destroyed by the man, but the City of God is built by God and cannot be destroyed.”

Tomorrow we get busy – we have an indestructible Kingdom to advance.

Isaiah 14:24-27 – The Lord Almighty has sworn this oath: “It will all happen as I have planned. It will come about according to my purposes … I have a plan for the whole earth, for my might power reaches throughout the world. The Lord Almighty has spoken – who can change his plans? When his hand moves, who can stop him?
