Classic Debate

I just finished my last intern class of the semester – I love hanging out with these young minds….so much potential!

I ended our class with a video clip that Jerry Batista shared with me – a spirited debate on the existence of Satan from Nightline.  The fact that we covered Screwtape as one of our studies made this clip relevant (whew).

Did God create evil?

Check out the debate:

HHMMM! I’ve heard it explained this way. God created light, he did not create dark. Darkness is the absence of light. You cannot make something darker…you have to remove the source of light. Likewise, there is no such thing as cold. Coldness really is the absence of heat. There is only heat, or a source of heat. You can only make something colder by removing the heat (or source of heat). You can, however, make something hotter or brighter.

God is love (or goodness). Evil is the end result of removing love or goodness. Where there is no God, there is no love. What is left is evil or darkness. Just like you cannot create cold or darkness, evil is the end result of not having love only given by the presence of God!
